CDM brings developers the opportunity to realise financial value from Landfill Gas
The greenhouse gas emission reductions associated from LFG utilisation projects have financial value. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one way in which LFG project developers can improve the economic viability of new projects and contribute to sustainable development in emerging economies.
CDM was first established in 1997 during international negotiations on the Kyoto Protocol. Since that time, policymakers have been working to make CDM funding for clean and renewable energy projects a reality. The recent introduction of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme has provided certainty that a long-term market for CDM carbon credits will exist.
The most significant buyers of CDM carbon credits to date have been multilateral institutions (such as the World Bank Prototype Carbon Fund) and EU Member State Governments (particularly the Government of the Netherlands). Private sector buyers in Japan, the EU and Canada are also becoming active participants in the CDM market.
Enviros is a leading provider of assistance to LFG project developers seeking assistance with CDM projects. Over the past 2 years Enviros has delivered technical, commercial and financial advice to the eThekwini Municipality (Durban) in South Africa for the sale of $15 million in CDM carbon credits to the World Bank Prototype Carbon Fund. Our role included structuring the transaction to optimise the financial outcome for the Municipality.
Enviros provides high-quality, professional services to serious investors in the global carbon market. The key attributes of our services are:
- Technical Competence: Enviros has been established in the field of industrial energy management for over twenty years. Our engineers have carried out numerous technical feasibility studies and engineering design works on waste incineration, biogas utilisation and power generation facilities. We draw upon this in-house capability to ensure that financial solutions do not ignore the practical constraints of on-time project commissioning and successful project operation.
- Expertise in Risk Analysis for Investors and Blue-Chip Corporations: Enviros provides transaction support to some of the world's leading companies and debt/equity investors. Our due diligence advice on the technical, commercial and environmental risks associated with asset financing is relied upon by clients including: BP, GE Capital, Bridgepoint Capital, CVC Capital Partners, ECI Ventures, Henderson Global Investors, and Nat West Development Capital, Shell, Statoil, and Total.
- Extensive Knowledge of the Global Carbon Market: Our consultants are an experienced group of professionals who have been at the leading edge of development of the global carbon market. Enviros developed the EU Carbon Balances Model in the spring of 2003 to assess the demand, supply and price of carbon allowances in the EU Emissions Trading scheme. The model has been used to support decision-making in several organisations including the largest power generator in the United States, a leading integrated oil and gas major, and one of Europe's largest commercial banks.
