Discussions: Topics of current interest to those involved in landfill gas system design, operation and monitoring.
Our first is a discussion of the relative merits of two opposing views in Landfill Gas Flare Control – should it be done by regular stack emission monitoring, or by certification based upon compliance with agreed design criteria? Do you agree that by compliance with design criteria alone these flares can be certified for the life of the flare? Read the discussion paper here. Then click here to email us with your views.
This page was originally prepared as a poster to promote discussion of the subject within the Irish Environmental Protection Agency.
Our second is a discussion of issues surrounding the Global Warming debate. Is Global Warming really proven to be caused by man's activities, and how does the incineration option look in the context of minimising Global Warming? Click here to read the article.
Research:
Current landfill gas emissions regulations apply only to active landfills, but much of the emission of landfill gas takes place from closed landfills. There is a pressing need to find new and better ways to control emissions from the thousands of closed sites which exist in the UK alone. Flare stacks are expensive to install and maintain, and older sites may not generate sufficient landfill gas at all times to sustain the flare. Periodically re-igniting the flares involves further cost and complexity, or else the use of expensive labour to provide regular attendance for manual flare re-ignition. Add to this the fact that there is no labour normally a vailable at a closed landfill and often no funding either, so the solution needs to be a passive one, and virtually maintenance free.
