Management of Gas from Landfills

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LINKS PROVIDED BELOW ARE PENDING AN UPDATE. ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE HAS BEEN ISSUED WHICH HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED BELOW. WE WILL SHORTLY UPDATE THIS PAGE. ALL USERS MUST ENSURE THAT THEY OBTAIN THE CURRENT GUIDANCE.

England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland
In the UK, the primary source document used to identify good practise in landfill gas management is still the the HMSO published document, "Waste Management Paper 26b", subsequently, further guidance was issued in "Waste Management Paper 27", and in areas where guidance in WMP 27, was also covered by WMP 26b, it is WMP 27 which takes precedence.

More recently the UK Environment Agency has issued documents which address specific topics. These are listed below, with important documents also from SEPA Scotland (although SEPA will normally adopt EA policy.

Policy in Wales is as in England, and this also applies for Northern Ireland, although it is always worth checking the extent to which EA guidance has been implemented locally, with the NI bodies responsible.

The Landfill Gas regulation scene is evolving rapidly in response to concerns about landfill odours, questions being asked about health risks to neighbouring communities, to implement European Directives, and to reduce carbon dioxide/global warming emissions - so the regulations and guidance can be expected to continue to change.

While we shall endeavour to keep these pages up to date, however, we recommend that users also themselves search the relevant agency web sites etc, to ensure the currency of the guidance used.
